Casting number 2

Today we went for Fionn's second casting.  Last week went really well.  Fionn went on about his business as usual.  Nothing it seems holds this kid back.  He walked almost all the time.  He never once complained of pain until the moment we were walking in the hospital today.  They removed the old casts with the special saw.  The loud noise was a little scary for Fionn but otherwise he was great.  When they cracked open the first cast we found a marble!  Yep, he stuffed a marble in his cast.  It left a dent and a little red mark but the guys taking off the casts said if it stayed longer could have caused some real damage.  Who knew?  Once the other cast was removed it revealed a sore on his ankle.  There must have been some pressure or chaffing.  They washed his legs and right away he got goose bumps.  And then right way his surgeon checked his feet, stretched them out a bit and put on the new casts.  This time one orange and one green cast.

As he was putting on the casts, our surgeon mentioned he preformed the same surgery on a little girl the day before.  Everything went well but she only needed one foot.  I asked him how long the surgery is going to take and he said for Fionn, it will probably a good 3 to 3 and a half hours. Three hours!!!  I've sat through a few surgeries in the waiting room before and none were that long.  I was with my sister when my nephew had his tonsils taken out and tubes put in his ears but that was just about an hour or so.  I was also with a friend of mine when her daughter had tubes put in her ears and that was no more then 15-20 minutes.  Regardless of how long they are in surgery for, it is still pretty terrifying for the parent.  You know they are in good hands but you still can't help but feel powerless and scared.  But three hours!!  I guess I should bring a book... although if memory serves me, I've never seen a parent be able to read while in that special waiting room.  This 3 hours scares me.  Not just the fact that my child is in surgery, although that is huge, but I'm just not good with waiting.  Especially waiting around for this sort of thing.  I'm good when it's not my child, which is why I've always offered to be there for my family or friend who I know would have otherwise been alone.  No one should be alone for that.  It's always nice to have someone to talk to, or to go get you a snack, or to watch your stuff if you need to go to the bathroom.  I guess those are some of the realities of being a single parent.

It won't be so bad.  We'll be fine.  We have to be.
And now for a bunch of pictures from our week.

The Sugar shack we went to.  First time we go to this one.

Waiting to go on a our walk through the sugar bush.

The rest of his little friend played in the park but I didn't want any sand in his casts so we ran around instead.

But I did let him go on this thing

This is my favorite part of the sugar shack!  Maple on snow, on a stick.  It's better then it sounds.

Fionn in front of the mural.

Enjoying his messy yummy maple treat!

Yummmm!!

It's real sticky too!

Don't waste it!!

Fionn enjoying his "homework".  I've started doing some activities with him to keep him on track.  He loves it!

Sawing off the first cast

A little nervous because of the loud noise!

Stubborn casts need more then just sawing

One foot free

Sore from his right ankle

Not sure if you can see but there's a slight red spot where the marble was on his left leg.

His brand new Orange cast

And the green one!
